Suspect barricaded inside Queens building after shots fired taken into custody

Police: Likely dispute leads to shooting in Queens

NEW YORK -- There were some tense moments in Queens on Wednesday after witnesses say a man shot his building's superintendent and then started firing shots out of a window.

Police said the suspect later barricaded himself inside a unit, but officers were eventually able to bring him out alive.

A 65-year-old man was rushed into an ambulance after police said he shot his superintendent and later shot himself in the chest.

"Like within two, three seconds starts gunshot, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom," neighbor Avter Singh said.

The NYPD said both men survived. Witnesses said the superintendent came out of the elevator with gunshot wounds to his chest and stomach.

"He laid down on the floor, then I call the 911," Singh said. I told him, 'I need some water. Don't close your eyes. Don't close your eyes.'"

He said the shooter shot the superintendent on the second floor and then went up to the sixth floor and started shooting out the window of apartment 6J at 31-31 54th St., in Woodside.

"I hold the super hand and I say, 'Come, come, come, don't worry,' and then the shooter again shooting," witness Gassi Kaur said.

Police said when officers got up to the sixth floor, they shot at the suspect but missed. They said the man barricaded himself inside the apartment.

Police said they used ballistic shields and blankets to keep civilians safe and get them out of the building.

"We were able to get our drones up to get a better view of the apartment to see what was inside," NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey said. "As we were putting the camera in the apartment, we heard a gunshot from the apartment. And with the use of our camera, we saw the male laying on the floor. He was yelling for help."

Maddrey said the Emergency Services Unit got the man to relinquish his firearm, and then took him into custody.

Police are investigating the motive, but said there was a dispute between the two before the shooting.

The suspect's condition wasn't immediately known, adding the superintendent underwent a surgery and is likely to survive.
