Police: Taxi Driver Struck Officer In Mount Vernon, Sped Off

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A police officer in Mount Vernon was injured Friday after being struck by a taxi cab that police said just took off, stopping miles away in the Bronx after police caught up to the driver.

Sources told CBS 2's Jessica Schneider that a taxi driver, who has several violations on his license, was pulled over by Mount Vernon police when he suddenly drove off and struck a police officer in the process.

The chaotic scene came to an abrupt end after state police officers, the NYPD and officers with the Mount Vernon Police Department caught up to the driver in Co-op City in the Bronx.

Bronx residents walking along Co-op City Boulevard saw the frantic scene unfold.

"We see a whole bunch of cop cars, like four of them rushing down and we saw two black cars, they didn't look like cop cars, but we see them like running down. We're like what happened?" one witness told Schneider.

At least one suspect was handcuffed and taken into police custody.

The police officer that was struck was taken to a nearby hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
