Police: New Brunswick Man Restrained By Family Becomes Ill, Dies

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) - Authorities say an emotionally disturbed man who apparently was trying to hurt himself became ill while being restrained by family members and later died.

Middlesex County prosecutors say police responded to the 35-year-old New Brunswick man's home on Friday night after his relatives reported he was in emotional distress.

When police arrived, they found family members restraining the man on the floor. The officers then assisted the family until emergency workers arrived.

Police and the emergency responders tried to resuscitate the man when he began showing symptoms of cardiac arrest. He was taken to a hospital, but was pronounced dead there a short time later.

A cause of death has not been determined.

The prosecutor's office is investigating the death, but said police acted properly during the incident.
