Police: N.J. Man Arrested For Pushing Stolen Baby Carriage Filled With Stolen Groceries

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- One New Jersey man took a stroll right into prison.

Shortly before 1 a.m. on Jan. 3, a man was spotted by police pushing a baby carriage on Ocean Avenue in Lakewood, N.J.

Since several baby strollers had been stolen in the past, Sgt. Jason Pederson decided to stop and speak to the man, identified as 40 year old George Reid of Lakewood, according to police.

While talking to Reid, Pederson noticed that the stroller did not have a baby inside, but was filled with unbagged groceries and a boxed toaster oven, according to police.

It was later determined that the items were stolen earlier from the Food-Ex grocery store located on Park Avenue, police said.

Reid was arrested and charged with burglary, theft and possession of drug paraphernalia after another officer -- Patrick Kearns -- found a crack pipe in his coat during the arrest, police said.

Reid is currently in the Ocean County jail. Bail was set at $5,000.
