Police: Mount Vernon Officers Shoot, Injure Man With Knife

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Police officers in Mount Vernon shot and injured a man after he allegedly lunged at officers with a knife and scissors, officials said.

The shooting happened on Friday at the home of 31-year-old Anthony Smith. Mount Vernon police described Smith as emotionally disturbed with a history of mental health issues.

Police said Smith was shot after officers tried unsuccessfully to subdue him with Tasers and pepper spray.

The police officers fired nine shots at Smith after he ignored their commands, authorities told The Journal News.

Authorities said Smith suffered wounds to his upper body and leg and was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx.
