Police: Man Caught At Norwalk Auto Yard Really Was Just Checking Locks

NORWALK, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- It seemed an unlikely excuse from a man suspected of breaking into cars at an auto yard.

But police said it appears a Norwalk man was being truthful when he insisted he was just checking the vehicles to make sure they were locked.

Alexander Louis, 20, was caught Friday by employees at Cotaling's Auto Body, 130 Connecticut Ave., on Friday, according to the Hour of Norwalk. The employees held him for police.

The newspaper reported that Louis told police he was simply making sure each car was locked and if he found one that wasn't, he would open the door and lock it.

Police reviewed security video and found his story seemed to check out. They could find no evidence of him going into any of the cars or stealing anything.

Louis isn't off the hook completely. He was still facing a trespassing charge Saturday.
