Police: Malnourished Dog Dumped In Dumpster In Bronx Housing Development

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police on Friday were trying to find out who stuffed a malnourished pit bull into a suitcase and dumped the animal into a dumpster in a Bronx public housing development.

Around 12:30 p.m. Thursday, officers on patrol in the Melrose Houses development, at 700 Morris Ave., were alerted by a passerby that a 1-year-old male brown pit bull had been found in a suitcase in a dumpster behind the building, police said.

They officers looked in the dumpster and sure enough, the dog's head was sticking out of the suitcase, 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported.

The rushed the dog to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, where he was receiving veterinary care for malnourishment.

In photos of the dog in treatment, the animal was emaciated to the point where his ribs were visible.
