Police: Loaded Gun Found On Man Allegedly Caught Drinking Wine On Queens Sidewalk

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police said they found a loaded gun and crack cocaine on a man they allegedly caught throwing back some wine on the sidewalk in St. Albans, Queens this past weekend.

Planiclothes officers in an unmarked squad car found Ronnie Woody, 31, sipping wine from a plastic cup near the corner of 205th Street and 116th Avenue in Queens around 11:45 p.m. Sunday, police alleged.

Woody allegedly put the cup down on a Nissan sedan parked near the corner, as he eyeballed the officers' slowing vehicle, police said. Officers allegedly saw him handling an object that was talked awkwardly in his waistband, moving it from the middle of his abdomen to the side, police said.

When he shifted, the handle of the gun was exposed, and officers took action, police said.

"Right where I grabbed him on his waist, I felt the butt of the firearm," 24-year-old Police Officer Daniel Pelan of the 113th Precinct said in a news release. "He said he wouldn't resist, he wouldn't run. And he didn't."
The gun was a .32-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver and was loaded, police said. A small amount of crack cocaine was also found on Woody's person, police said.

Woody was charged with criminal possession of a loaded firearm and criminal possession of a controlled substance, and got a ticket for allegedly drinking alcohol from an open container in public, police said.

He has a rap sheet that includes arrests on allegations of rape, armed robbery, and narcotics offenses, police said.

He was to be arraigned Monday evening.
