Police: LI Mother Left 10-Month-Old In Car While She Shopped

HUNTINGTON STATION, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island woman was arrested after police said she left her infant son unattended in a car while she shopped.

Suffolk County Police said a woman noticed a baby crying in a vehicle in the parking lot of the Target on East Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station just before 2:15 p.m. Sunday.

Police said the woman and another passerby used a car antenna to open the car and rescue the baby. The woman also called 911.

When officers arrived, they found the child's mother, who they said had been shopping inside Target for about 30 minutes.

The 10-month-old baby was taken to Huntington Hospital for evaluation before being released to a family member, police said.

The child's mother, identified by police as 20-year-old Tirza Artiga-Acosta, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

Police said the Suffolk County Department of Social Services Child Protective Services Bureau was notified about the incident.
