Police: Shooting Suspect Shot, Injured By Officer Near Walt Whitman Houses
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A suspect is in police custody and recovering at a hospital following a police-involved shooting in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.
Authorities said it all unfolded at Carlton Avenue and Cumberland Walk just before 8 p.m. Friday when the suspect opened fire on a 19-year-old man.
Police officers at the Walt Whitman Houses across the street heard the gunfire and encountered a 20-year-old suspect with a gun in hand as he ran from the scene, police said.
As the officers approached the suspect, one of the officers discharged his weapon, striking the suspect in his left shoulder, police said.
A Kel Tec .9mm semi-automatic gun was recovered at the scene.
Ali, who owns a deli right where the first shooting took place, told 1010 WINS' Mona Rivera the victim had just bought two sandwiches from his shop when he was confronted by the shooter and several other men.
"When he took the two sandwiches, he got outside and the guy, he hit him in the back. He ran across the street and when he ran across the street, we heard the shots," he said.
The nature of the dispute between the two men was not immediately clear.
The 19-year-old victim was taken to Methodist Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, 1010 WINS reported.
The 20-year-old shooting suspect is being treated for non-life threatening injuries at Bellevue Medical Center. Police said charges against him are pending.
