Woman Charged In 4-Year-Old Girl's Death At Queens Homeless Shelter

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A woman has been charged with murder, following the death of a 4-year-old girl at a city-run homeless shelter.

Latoya Curry, 35, of Queens, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of Linayjah Meraldo, police said.

Linayjah was found unconscious and unresponsive Thursday afternoon at a facility on 134th Street in Briarwood.

EMS arrived and pronounced the child dead.

The girl's mother was questioned by police, CBS 2 reported. It was not immediately confirmed that Curry was the girl's mother.

The Department of Homeless Services released a statement saying, "The loss of a child is always terribly disturbing. We are responsible for the safety of our children and families, and we are working closely with the Police Department to investigate the tragic death."

On Saturday, 3-year-old Jeida Torres died at a Bushwick shelter. Her stepfather, 20-year-old Kelsey Smith, is charged with her murder.
