Police In New Jersey Investigate 'Wet Bandit' Burglary

WYCKOFF, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Some crooks in New Jersey may be taking cues from a very popular Christmas movie.

As WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported, the odd burglary had all the hallmarks of the 1990's classic "Home Alone."

"When they entered their house, what immediately caught their attention was water was running out of the ceiling," said Wyckoff Police Chief Benjamin Fox.

Fox said the sink had been stuffed with towels.

"It was at that time that they discovered that the house had been burglarized and all the rooms had been ransacked," Fox said.

In the movie, one of the thieves leaves the water running in the houses they burglarize, saying it was their "calling card." The fictional characters called themselves the "wet bandits."

The burglars in Wyckoff stole a handgun and jewelry.

Chief Fox said the crime doesn't fit a pattern, but it is bit bizarre, Diamond reported.
