Police In L.I. Rescue Man Who Said He Fell In Water, Got Stuck Under Bridge
SHIRLEY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police on Long Island rescued a man early Saturday, after the man said he fell off the Smith Point Bridge into the water.
County Parks Police Officer Patrick Noak heard a man yelling for help near the bridge in Shirley around 12:05 a.m. Saturday. A Suffolk County police Marine Bureau boat manned by officers Charles Abbene, Keith Walters and Christian Schnoor also responded due to concerns that there might be someone in the water.
Noak found Steven Perez, 21, of Shirley on a bridge pillar under the center span of the bridge, in just his underwear. Perez said he had been sitting on the railing of the bridge and fell in the water, police said.
Perez told police he had taken off his sweatshirt because it made it hard for him to swim, and after climbing onto the pillar, he had taken off his pants because he thought he would be warmer without them, police said.
Officers from the Marine Bureau boat helped Perez off the pillar and took him to a waiting ambulance, which transported Perez to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
