Police Helicopter Unit Rescues Man In Cardiac Arrest From Dredge Barge
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police officers in a helicopter unit rescued a man suffering from chest pains onboard a dredge barge offshore from the Rockaways Thursday.
The U.S. Coast Guard contacted the NYPD at 1:34 p.m. Thursday, after calls of a man suffering from the dredge barge Super Chief, police said. The barge was about 1.63 miles due south of Breezy Point, Queens at the time, police said.
The NYPD Harbor Unit assisted the onboard paramedic to revive the 47-year-old man, who was in cardiac arrest, police said.
Around 1:50 p.m., NYPD Air Sea Rescue Helicopter 22 was dispatched, and hovered above the barge while a rescue basket with an NYPD Scuba member was lowered down, police said.
The officer continued CPR on the man as he was hoisted onto the helicopter, and taken to Staten Island University Hospital South, police said.
The man was listed in critical, but stable, condition late Thursday.
The officers involved in the rescue were pilot Detective Erin Egan, co-pilot Detective Christopher Maher, Scuba Unit Detective John Mortimer who was lowered in the basket, Scuba Unit Detective Brian Mullen, and Crew Chief Detective Tom Diaz.
