LAKE GROVE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Suffolk County Police are trying to figure out who stole flags from Civil War graves and damaged property at a cemetery in Lake Grove.

Between Oct. 10 and Oct. 13, police said someone stole two American flags, damaged a 150-year-old headstone, and moved two flower wreaths at the Lake Ronkonkoma Cemetery.

"These men and women they served their country, they fought during the American Civil War and they should be allowed to rest in peace," Sgt. Michael Alfano said.

Police are looking into whether students from Sachem High School East committed the crime as part of a scavenger hunt, that apparently took place on the night of Oct. 12, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.

The scavenger hunt included activities such as stealing a mailbox for 20 points or dancing on a grave for 30 points, Hall reported.

The school's principal said the scavenger hunt was not a school sponsored event.

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
