When officers arrived, they found a 48-year-old man acting erratically outside the house, police said. As officers approached, the man went back inside and then barricaded himself inside a room, police said.

Neighbor John Slattery said the man then went out onto a balcony.

"Just throwing, it looks like everything except the kitchen sink, out of his house at the cops," Slattery told 1010 WINS' Darius Radzius.

"He was just throwing out chairs, glass, bottles, plates, pillows," another neighbor, Arianna Santos, said.

After a brief standoff with police, officers were eventually able to take the man into custody.

While searching the home, police said they found 87-year-old Alice Durso unconscious and unresponsive in another room with head trauma. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 67-year-old woman with an injury to her left arm, a 55-year-old man with head trauma and a 56-year-old woman with a laceration to her face were also found inside the home. They were all taken to the hospital in stable condition.

The 48-year-old man was taken to the hospital for an evaluation and remains in police custody, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
