Police: East Harlem Dunkin' Donuts Employee Chased Away Would-Be Robber With Bat

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police on Friday continued to search for a man who tried to hold up a Dunkin' Donuts in East Harlem, before an employee chased him off with a baseball bat.

The suspect stormed into the Dunkin' Donuts at 159 E. 116th St. around 1 a.m. March 10, and flashed a sharp object that appeared to be a screwdriver, police told CBS2.

The suspect demanded money, but the male employee drew a baseball bat and the suspect ran off, police said.

Nothing was taken in the robbery, and on one was injured, police said.

DNAInfo released surveillance video showing the suspect pulling out the screwdriver and leaning over the counter, only to pick up a bag he had left on the counter and leave when the employee wields the bat.

The employee, Imtiaj Ahmed Belal, told DNAInfo that the suspect demanded that he open the cash register, but he instead got the bat from behind the counter, waved it, and shouted at the suspect.

Belal told DNAInfo that police came to the scene right away, and said he would like to become a police officer himself.
