Police: Driver Charged After Boy Struck, Killed By Minivan In Crown Heights

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A woman has been arrested after police said she struck and killed a 5-year-old boy who was crossing the street in Brooklyn.

Elizabeth Mayard, 23, is charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, reckless driving and other traffic violations, police said.

It happened just after 8:30 p.m. Sunday on Empire Boulevard in Crown Heights.

A preliminary investigation determined 5-year-old Rashard Charles was crossing the street mid-block with his mother when he was hit by a double parked minivan as it was backing up in the roadway, police said.

"All you heard was a lady screaming," one witness said. "She was face to face with the driver saying, 'you hit my son.'"

Authorities said Mayard then fled the scene, but later returned and was arrested.

Charles was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The investigation is ongoing.
