Police Disperse Massive Crowd Waiting For Shoe Release Outside SoHo Store

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- NYPD officers had to disperse a massive crowd on Wednesday that had gathered outside a SoHo store for the release of a pricey new sneaker.

According to authorities, about 300 people had lined up in front of the Supreme New York retail store on Lafayette Street around 5 p.m.

By 8 p.m., the crowd had nearly doubled, spilling out onto the street.

Police said they dispersed the crowd due to safety concerns.

The store was closed at the time.

The $250 Supreme/Nike Air Foamposite was to go on sale at the store Thursday.

Supreme later issued a statement saying that due to public safety concerns the sneaker would only be available at 11 a.m. Thursday on its web site, according to published reports.

Police said there were no arrests or injuries.
