Police Charge Queens Burglary Suspect Injured In Police-Involved Shooting

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police have charged a suspect who was injured in a police-involved shooting after they said he attacked two officers during a burglary in Queens.

Leighton Friday, 19, is charged with burglary, assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and criminal mischief, police said.

It happened inside a home on 142nd Street in Jamaica on Monday.

Police said a woman hid upstairs in the home when she heard someone break in.

"I heard the door slam, the drawers open, the closet doors start opening," said the woman, who did not want to be identified. "I realized it could be somebody in the house."

When officers arrived, police said the suspect attacked, hitting one of them in the head with the metal object.

Both officers fired at Friday, who was shot in the leg and wrist.

He was taken to Jamaica Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The officer who was hit in the head was also taken to Jamaica Hospital and treated for minor injuries.
