Cab Strikes, Kills Pedestrian On Upper East Side

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A taxicab struck and killed a pedestrian on the Upper East Side on Saturday, police said.

At around 2:45 p.m., the 76-year-old woman was walking northbound in the crosswalk on East 60th Street when she was hit by the cab, which was making a left turn onto East 60th Street from Madison Avenue, police said.

Amelia Sterental, of Miami, was pronounced dead at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Passersby performed CPR on the woman, but to no avail, 1010 WINS' Gary Baumgarten reported.

The taxi driver, who was distraught and crying, remained at the scene. No charges have been filed.

Police are continuing to investigate.

People who live and work in the neighborhood told Baumgarten that cabs generally zoom through the area trying to beat the lights.

"The cabs drive like maniacs over here," one man said.
