Police: Suspect Charged In Rape Near Bronx Zoo

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Police said a Bronx man has been charged with raping a woman who was dragged into a secluded area from a street near the Bronx Zoo.

It happened shortly after 6 a.m. Thursday near Boston Road and Pelham Parkway.

Police said Jose Roys started a conversation with a 51-year-old woman who was standing near a bus stop.

He then punched her in the face and dragged her to a secluded area, raped her and fled, police said.

The woman was taken to Jacobi Hospital in stable condition with cuts to her face.

After police released a video that showed a suspect walking along a street, Roys surrendered, authorities said.

He was charged with rape, robbery, criminal sex act and assault.
