Police: Bay Shore Man Faces Street Racing, Other Charges

MELVILLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Police have arrested a man on street racing and other charges on Long Island.

An officer responded to Melville Park Road in Melville at 11:15 p.m. Sunday where about 70 vehicles were gathered and two cars were preparing to race, police said.

The spectators and one of the drivers fled after seeing the officer, police said. The other driver, Fernando Romero-Alvarado, 35, of Bay Shore, was arrested after trying to flee.

He faces charges of unauthorized speed contest, reckless driving and unlawfully fleeing a police officer.

The 1996 green Honda Civic Alvarado was driving was impounded, police said.

He is expected to be arraigned Monday at First District Court in Central Islip.
