Police Arrest Suspect In Long Island Hit-And-Run

SHIRLEY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police have made an arrest in a hit-and-run on Long Island that left a woman with serious injuries.

Police said 23-year-old John Almeida struck Marie Braccia while she crossed Grand Avenue in Shirley on Thursday night and then took off in his Nissan Maxima.

CBS 2 exclusively obtained video that showed the hit-and-run. Braccia appears clearly in a surveillance video walking away from a music school moments after dropping off her son. Seconds later, as she crosses the street, she is hit. The driver does not even slow down upon impact.

The people in the music store heard the commotion outside and there, the teen found his mother lying critically injured in the street.

Braccia, who was rushed to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue, remains hospitalized with serious injuries.

Almeida faces several charges, including leaving the scene of a crime and aggravated operation of a vehicle, CBS 2 reported.
