Police Arrest Suspect In Connection With 7 Assaults In Brooklyn
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police have arrested a suspect in connection with seven assaults in Brooklyn, six of which are considered hate crimes.
According to the New York Police Department, Barry Baldwin, of Brownsville, was charged with six counts of aggravated harassment as a hate crime, one count of aggravated harassment, one count of attempted assault, and o count of menacing.
Baldwin, 35, is accused of targeting women, hitting most of them in the back of the head during daylight hours, 1010 WINS reported. Police said he missed one of the targeted women.
The first attack dates to Nov. 9, 2013, when police say Baldwin struck a 78-year-old woman in the back of the head at the corner of Avenue L and East 5th Street.
Baldwin allegedly struck again on Dec. 7, Dec. 21, twice on Dec. 24, on Dec. 26, and Dec. 27.
Police said all of the incidents follow the same pattern as the first attack. However, they said during the Dec. 26 attack the suspect missed when he swung at the victim and the victim fled the location.
The NYPD would not elaborate on why they are treating the incidents as hate crimes.
