Police: 6-Year-Old Accidentally Drives Battery Operated Car Onto Bronx River Parkway

MT. VERNON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – A boy with autism was rescued from the Bronx River Parkway in Mt. Vernon Sunday evening after investigators said he accidentally drove onto the highway, CBS 2 reported.

Investigators said the 6-year-old was driving a ride-in, battery-operated children's electric car in a nearby park when he accidentally ended up on the parkway.

Police told 1010 WINS a teenager was looking after him when he got distracted.

The family began searching the neighborhood, park and walked to police headquarters in Mt. Vernon to report the boy missing, 1010 WINS reported.

Police said while the family was at the station, Westchester County police received 911 calls reported a small child driving the battery-powered car onto the parkway at the northbound Oak Street ramp.

CBS 2 reported that drivers slowed down, boxed him in and kept him there until police arrived.

The child is being evaluated at the hospital, CBS 2 reported.
