Police: 2-Year-Old Dies After 5-Floor Fall From Apartment Window

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A toddler fell to his death from a window of New York City apartment building early Sunday morning.

Authorities said 2-year-old Nayvem Santos fell to a second-floor landing from the seventh floor of a Gerard Avenue building in the Bronx around 4:20 a.m. Sunday.

The child was discovered unconscious and unresponsive when officers arrived, police said. He was pronounced dead a short time later at Lincoln Hospital.

A spokesman for the NYPD said Nayvem's death appears to be an "unfortunate accident.'' He said the boy lived in the apartment building, located about four blocks from Yankee Stadium.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
