Police: 2 Slashed Inside Upper West Side Apartment

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police are investigating after two men broke into a tony Upper West Side apartment and slashed a man and a woman who were inside the home.

As 1010 WINS' Gary Baumgarten reported, the building at West End and West 104th Street has a doorman so you would think residents would be secure, but somehow at 4:45 a.m. Saturday two men got past the doorman and up the 17th floor.

Joe, who lives in the building, said he thinks he knows how the two suspect got by.

"I got in somehow because there is a temporary door guy who let me in," he said. "Basically that's just New York City. Stuff happens."

Momo Staffa walks dogs in the building and said usually the doormen are vigilant.

"I don't know why he let them in for some reason," he said. "I think he buzzed the intercom and it's not working."

Maxine Yard, who cares for a senior citizen in the building, said the incident has left her worried about her patient's safety.

"I don't think it's safe. I'm scared because I have a senior in there," she said.

The man and woman were taken to St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center for treatment, Baumgarten reported.

Police said nothing was taken from the apartment after the couple fought back against their attackers, CBS 2 reported.

Investigators said one of the suspects was stabbed in the torso during the struggle.

Some neighbors told Baumgarten they've complained about constant traffic to and from the apartment at all hours of the day and night.

One of the suspects was described as a bald, white male. The other was described as a white male with spiked hair, CBS 2 reported.
