Police: 2 Men Steal Safe With $50,000 From Elderly Long Island Couple

GLEN COVE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police are looking for two men who allegedly scammed an elderly Long Island couple out of their life savings, which they kept in a safe in their home.

The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at a home on Wolfle Street in Glen Cove.

Homeowner Michael Angrisano, 79, said the men knocked on his door and posed as neighbors looking to trim trees near the fence line.

"He said I live next door over there, come around the back," Angrisano told 1010 WINS' Mona Rivera.

When Angrisano and his 85-year-old wife, Lucia, went outside, one of the men talked with them in the yard for a few minutes while the other man went back into the house, police said.

After the men left, Angrisano checked his bedroom closet and discovered that his safe containing over $50,000 was missing, police said.

"The safe is gone," Angrisano said.

Police are looking for a silver or grey 4 door pickup truck with a cover on the back bed, which Angrisano said he saw backing out of his driveway.

Police released vague descriptions of the suspects. One is described as a white man, approximately 5'11" with a mustache and wearing a baseball cap. The other suspect is described as a heavy set white man with short dark hair, possibly 5'7" wearing dark clothing.

"If someone's knocking at the door and you don't know who they are, you don't have to open it," said Glen Gove Police Lt. John Nagle. "If you feel something is wrong, give the police department a call and we'll be more than happy to come check it out."

Nagle told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall he believes the Angrisanos may have been targeted because of their age.

About 15 minutes earlier, a man fitting the description of one of the suspects entered a home just a block away, but an aide for a 93-year-old chased him off, police said.

Anyone with information is urged to call Glen Cove Police at 516-320-7929.
