Police: 18-Month-Old Child Hit, Killed By Pickup Truck In Spring Valley

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An 18-month-old boy was killed Friday morning after being hit by a pickup truck in Spring Valley, police said.

It happened around 8:30 a.m. in a parking lot between two apartment buildings on Rose Avenue.

The toddler was playing in the parking lot when the driver of the pickup hit the child as he was pulling out of a parking spot, CBS 2's Lou Young reported.

Police said the child was pronounced dead at the scene.

It's unclear if speed was a factor in the incident, but residents said a lack of a playground in the area is an issue.

"It's a raceway at times, but I don't think that was the case this morning," neighbor Keandra Epps said. "This is not a playground, it's a parking lot and that's what's wrong with the community. We need to get more areas for these children to play so they don't utilize the parking lot as a playground."

Police believe the mother had left the toddler with his two older siblings when she went next door to a deli, 1010 WINS' Al Jones reported.

The driver remained on scene and was being questioned, but no charges have been filed.

The child's mother was traumatized by what happened and was taken to the hospital.

The investigation is ongoing.
