Pew Research Center: Number Of Americans Who've Never Been Married Hits Record High

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - If you're single and have never been married, you're not alone.

A new report by the Pew Research Center finds the number of American adults who have never walked down the aisle has risen significantly in the past 50 years.

In 1960, just nine percent of American adults had never been married. In 2012, that number had grown to 20 percent: Roughly 42 million people.

That doesn't mean people aren't looking to settle down: 53 percent of those who've never been married say they're still want to some day.

Even that majority, though, is declining. It's down from 61 percent in 2010.

The study found men and women want different qualities in a mate.

Among never-married women, 78 percent say finding someone with a steady job would be very important. Seventy percent of never-married men said sharing similar views about raising children is more important than finding someone with a steady job.
