Officials: Personal Information At Risk After Laptops Stolen From LI Hospital

LONG ISLAND (CBSNewYork) -- Officials at a Long Island hospital say several patients' personal information is at risk after several laptops were stolen from a health care facility.

Personal patient information was stored in four of five laptops that were stolen from the offices of Global Care Delivery which does work with the North Shore LIJ, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reports.

The information included names, social security numbers, birth dates, insurance ID numbers, health information and internet account numbers from those who sought treatment.

Up to 18,000 people could be affected, said the hospital spokesperson.

Although the thefts happened in September, the health system was just recently notified. Letters were sent out to patients as the spokesperson said it's believed the suspects wanted the computers, not the information.

Identity theft protection services are being made available to the patients who were impacted.
