NTSB: Pence Campaign Plane Flew 'Thousands Of Feet' Along LaGuardia Airport Runway

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The National Transportation Safety Board has released new information surrounding an incident at LaGuardia Airport where the campaign plane of vice president-elect Mike Pence skidded off a runway.

The NTSB says the plane flew just above the runway for thousands of feet without actually touching down. The pilots then hit the brakes and thrust reversers, CBS2 reported.

The plane then skidded off the runway before being stopped by a special safety system built into the ground. The plane made a rough impact when it landed, tearing through tracks of concrete as it came to rest in a grassy area. The FDNY said the 737 went through a fence.

The incident occurred around 7:40 p.m. on Oct. 27, as the plane was coming into New York from Fort Dodge, Iowa, where it had made a hard landing but stayed on the runway earlier that afternoon.

The agency says there were no apparent mechanical problems.

The plane was carrying more than 30 people, including Pence, his family, staffers and the press covering the campaign.

There were no reported injuries.
