Residents: Streetlights Burned Out All Around Pelham Bay Park

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The largest public park administered by New York City has gone dark, and nearby residents said their complaints are being ignored.

Streetlights throughout Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx appear to be burned out. CBS2 saw several lights while driving through the area on Shore Road.

The City Island Civic Association said the problem has been going on for more than a year.

It said drivers already face problems such as too many deer in the area and unsafe road conditions – all made worse by the lack of light.

"All those issues get compounded if you can't see what you're doing, and the fact that there are 66 lights out within this park -- the largest park in the city of New York -- is a very serious problem," said John Doyle of the City Island Civic Association.

The city Department of Transportation said it is aware of the concerns and working on repairs.
