Passaic Housing Authority Chairman Darius Allen Resigns Following Arrest

PASSAIC, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The chairman of the Passaic Housing Authority has resigned following his arrest on drug and gun charges.

City spokesman Keith Furlong tells The Record newspaper Darius Allen wrote he was unable to fulfill his duties under the "current circumstances."

The 44-year-old was arrested Tuesday night after police searched his home as the result of a three-month investigation. Officers said they found 40 grams of cocaine, a handgun and drug-packaging materials.

Allen has also been suspended with pay from his job with the Passaic Board of Education.

Last week, a longtime Passaic recreational director was charged with extorting sports teams who wanted to join city leagues, the Passaic County prosecutor's office said.
