Part Of Tappan Zee Project Put On Hold Following Complaints About 'Excruciating' Noise

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Part of the new Tappan Zee Bridge construction project is being shut down.

The announcement brought a sigh of relief to residents in South Nyack.

"The noise was excruciating," Mayor Bonnie Christian said.

Christian told WCBS 880's Jim Smith that residents have been complaining for weeks that sheet pile-driving was making too much noise.

"People were leaving their houses. Even the vibrations of the noise were causing residents' homes were shaking," she said.

On Thursday, state officials shut down the work, saying that it had exceeded the 90 decibel limit set in the contract. The work has been put on hold until the contractor can install additional noise reducing measures.

"I am very pleased that they have listened to the residents," Christian said.
