LaGuardia Terminal Cleared After Smoking Package Prompts Evacuation

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Part of Terminal C at LaGuardia Airport was evacuated as a precaution Tuesday as authorities investigated a report of smoke coming from a package, the Port Authority said.

A ramp worker reported the smoke outside Delta Flight 5208 shortly before noon.

The package never made it on the plane, which was cleared, and was moved to a remote location for the bomb squad to investigate. Spokesman Joe Pentangelo said the package was X-rayed and declared harmless.

The flight took off for Richmond, Va. around 12:35 p.m. without incident, WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported.

Passengers were allowed to re-enter Terminal C around 1 p.m., Diamond reported.
