AG: Papa John's Franchise Owner Faces Jail Time For Illegally Taking Employee Wages

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The owner of nine Papa Johns pizza franchises in the Bronx has been convicted of illegally taking wages from employees.

Abdul Jamil Khokhar was sentenced to 60 days in jail. He will also have to pay $280,000 in fines and an additional $230,000 in restitution to workers, according to Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.

Khokhar was arrested in July under charges of not paying employees minimum wage and trying to avoid overtime. Khokhar pleaded guilty and willingly turned himself over to authorities.

In March, Schneiderman obtained judgment against a different Papa John's pizzeria owner in Harlem for improperly paying employees in five of his restaurants. Ronald Johnson, owner of New Majority Holdings LLC, was ordered to pay $2.12 million.
