Dramatic Dashcam Footage Shows Wrong Way, High-Speed Chase On Palisades Parkway

FORT LEE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) --  Heart-pounding video released Wednesday showed police chasing a murder suspect on the Palisades Interstate Parkway.

As CBS2's Tony Aiello reported, the suspect was driving the wrong way at a high rate of speed as he tried to get away.

The chase took place Monday morning. New York State Police were chasing 45-year-old David Campos, who was wanted in the stabbing death of his girlfriend in upstate Troy, New York. State Police called the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police for assistance.

The dashcam video was posted on NorthJersey.com.

Campos was headed south on the Palisades Interstate Parkway in a black Chrysler 200.

At points during the chase, police said Campos hit speeds of nearly 90 miles per hour. The video captures the Chrysler crossing into northbound traffic, going the wrong way, driving through a gas station passing attendants and motorists in Englewood Cliffs. It also races along the shoulder of the road near slow moving traffic.

The driver threads through traffic as commuters pull off to the side.

"It was definitely an insane, you know, chase," said Liam Morgan.

Moran was driving north on the Palisades, approaching the gas station near the George Washington Bridge, when suddenly, the chase was coming right toward him.

Campos and his pursuers crossed from the southbound side of the expressway to the northbound side – going against traffic at the gas station.

Moran was among the drivers who had to swerve to avoid being hit.

"I had to get my breath a little bit. I was a little, you know, unnerved -- you know, gut reaction -- just get out of the way," Moran said. "I guess you just learn that, you know, in bumper cars or whatever -- I don't know."

Campos drove south in the northbound lanes for several miles before finally crossing into the proper lane in Fort Lee.

The pursuit continued all the way a toll plaza on the Eastern Spur of the New Jersey Turnpike in Ridgefield Park, where a traffic jam forced Campos to stop. A cluster of officers took him safely to the ground.

Police said multiple charges and extradition are pending.
