Ex-Oyster Bay Official Gets Prison For Tax Evasion

OYSTER BAY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A former town official on Long Island will serve more than two years in prison for failing to pay taxes on money he received as a commissioner.

Former Oyster Bay Planning and Development Commissioner Fred Ippolito was sentenced to 27 months in prison for tax evasion from a $2 million payment he received from a contractor.

The 77-year-old will also have to pay over $548,000 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service.

The judge admonished Ippolito, saying something is corrupt in Oyster Bay, WCBS 880's Mike Xirinachs reported.

Town resident Dean Hart said he hopes lessons are learned from this case.

"Anytime somebody's brought to justice, people will think a little bit harder about committing crimes against the community," said town resident Dean Hart.

As part of the sentence, Ippolito also waived his right to appeal.
