Overnight BQE Crash Snarls Morning Commute

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Traffic was backed up for miles Wednesday morning on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway after a crash overnight.

It happened 4:35 a.m. Wednesday in the eastbound lanes of the BQE near Atlantic Avenue. A box truck somehow lost control and overturned, spilling its cargo all over the road.

Fire officials said one person was taken to a hospital in serious condition.

The eastbound lanes and two westbound lanes of the expressway were shut down for a time as crews worked to clear debris from the road. All but one eastbound lane have since reopened.

Traffic was being diverted at Fort Hamilton Parkway. Westbound traffic at the scene of the accident and over the Brooklyn Bridge is moving slowing.

The cause of the accident wasn't immediately known.
