Out-Of-Control MTA Bus Hits Over A Dozen Parked Cars In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A driver lost control of a Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus Friday evening and slammed into more than a dozen parked cars.

The accident happened just before 7:30 p.m. at Nassau Avenue and Sutton Street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, authorities said.

As CBS 2's Tracee Carrasco reported, about 20 cars were damaged across two entire blocks.

Some cars were just side swiped or scratched while others were heavily damaged with broken windows, doors dented in, mirrors and tires ripped off, front and rear-end bumpers crumpled.

Some vehicles were even pushed into the car in front of them and one car ended up on the side walk.

The bus also smashed into a red truck with a driver behind the wheel. Witnesses told Carrasco the driver was taken away on a stretcher.

The MTA said five people who were in vehicles and the bus operator were injured.

All six were taken to Woodhull Medical Center. The conditions of those injured were unknown.

It was not immediately confirmed what caused the bus driver to lose control, but bus passengers told Carrasco that it appeared the driver had suffered some kind of medical emergency, possibly a seizure, and lost consciousness.

"We wanted to stop the bus, but he was blocked, there's a bar. So we just started holding onto bars and started hitting cars," one passenger said.

Residents in the neighborhood said they heard the commotion and went outside to find that their cars had been damaged.

"I walked out to check out my car and low and behold it looks like Godzilla ripped a hole in the door," one resident told Carrasco.

Tow trucks were on the scene late Friday taking the MTA bus as well as some of the other damaged vehicles away from the scene.

Resident said they were happy and thankful no pedestrians walking along the street were injured.
