Report: Umenyiora Might Sign 1-Day Contract With Giants, Ceremoniously Retire

According to ESPN.com, free-agent defensive end/outside linebacker Osi Umenyiora might sign a one-day contract with the Giants and retire with the organization that drafted him.

Umenyiora and the Giants are in talks about such an arrangement, the website reports.

Umenyiora played with Big Blue from 2003-12 and helped New York win Super Bowls XLII and XLVI over the Patriots. The 33-year-old recorded 75 sacks as a Giant, ranking him fourth in franchise history behind Michael Strahan, Lawrence Taylor and Leonard Marshall.

The two-time Pro Bowler had 14.5 sacks in 2005 and 13 sacks in 2007. He had nine sacks in 2011 despite playing in just nine games due to injury, and added 3.5 sacks in the playoffs during New York's triumphant Super Bowl run.

After the 2012 season, the two-time All-Pro signed a two-year deal with the Falcons.

In 32 games for Atlanta he amassed 59 combined tackles, 10 sacks, three forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, an interception and a touchdown.

Now on the open market, Umenyiora is considering retirement. He's reportedly open to playing another season, though it appears that there's limited interest around the league in his services.

According to ESPN.com, if Umenyiora doesn't come to terms with a team soon he will retire with the Giants and a formal announcement will be made during training camp.
