Orlando Police Post Photo Of Officer's Kevlar Helmet Hit By Gunfire From Nightclub Gunman

ORLANDO (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The Orlando Police Department posted a surreal picture of an officer's helmet that was hit by a bullet from the Orlando nightclub gunman.

"Pulse shooting: In hall of gunfire in which suspect was killed, OPD officer was hit. Kevlar helmet saved his life," the department tweeted.

Fifty people were killed in the shooting at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, in what is the worst mass shooting in United States history.

CBS News identified the gunman as Omar Mateen, 29, from Port St. Lucie. Mateen is an American citizen who was born to Afghan parents.

Authorities are investigating the shooting as an act of terrorism.
