Operation Fuel Works To Provide Heat To Those Without The Resources To Pay

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Chilly autumn weather will soon turn to below-freezing and in Connecticut, one organization is urging residents to check off the "Add-a-Dollar" program on their monthly fuel bills to help keep those less fortunate out of the cold.

As WCBS 880's Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau reported, it's a small donation; but Pat Wrice, executive director of Operation Fuel -- which provides oil heat to those without the resource to pay -- says last year, the program's donations amounted to about a half million dollars.

It was a huge boost, Wrice says, since each year the number of those needing help seems to grow.

"We can't give what we don't have. And as painful as it is, sometimes we have to say no. We run out of funds. After we run out of funds, I think people are kind of left on their own," she said.

Wrice says in Connecticut, there are approximately 300,000 households which need help paying their fuel bills.
