Opera Star Renée Fleming Takes Leap To Broadway

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Superstar soprano Renée Fleming feels right at home at the Metropolitan Opera and at opera houses across the globe.

The singer known as the "People's Diva" is now hoping to hit a high note doing something she's never done before.

Fleming is making her Broadway debut in the comedy "Living on Love." Opening night is Monday at the Longacre Theatre.

The musical is a tongue-in-cheek look at an opera diva married to a diva conductor.

"This kind of comedy is very hard," Fleming told CBS2's Dana Tyler. "And I've had no experience. I haven't even done a light role in opera. I always die. It's always tragedy. My job is to make people cry for my whole life."

Fleming said being able to step outside of her comfort zone and make people laugh instead is a "drug."

"It's so addictive," she said. "It's so much fun."

The show also stars Douglas Sills, Anna Chlumsky and Jerry O'Connell.
