Officials: Scammers Threatening Mamaroneck Building Owners With Eminent Domain

MAMARONECK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Officials in the Village of Mamaroneck are warning building owners of scammers threatening building owners with eminent domain.

Someone flashing a fake federal government ID has been intimidating property owners, telling them to sell or else the village will seize the property, WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported.

"The Village of Mamaroneck has absolutely no plans, nor has it ever been discussed for eminent domain, where we are going to take property away from people. This, I believe, is a scare tactic and I think it is totally egregious," Mayor Norman Rosenbloom said. "They're scaring people and they're telling lies."

Any potential victims are asked to contact the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department at 914-777-1122, ext. 3 and ask for a detective.

Rosenbloom is also warning residents of another scam over the telephone.

"People are calling up claiming they are from the U.S. Treasury and that if you don't make a payment within one hour then we are going to send a marshal to your house and arrest you. Well, that just doesn't happen," Rosenbloom said. "No government agency will call you on the phone and threaten you like that; and if they do it's totally illegal."
