Officials: Restoration Of Cupsogue Beach Pavilion Destroyed In Weekend Fire Could Take Years

WESTHAMPTON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- It could be a few years before a popular pavilion at a Long Island beach is fully functional following a devastating weekend fire.

The fire Saturday night destroyed the pavilion, most of the boardwalk and facilities at Westhampton's hugely popular Cupsogue Beach County Park, WCBS 880's Mike Xirinachs reported.

While county officials expect to have the beach open by next season, they now admit that it'll likely be years before the pavilion and other facilities are restored, Xirinachs reported.

The beach is one of the county's few public accesses to the ocean and residents are already missing it.

"It's a long boardwalk and people can sit, have some coffee and something to eat," one woman said.

Arson investigators are continuing their probe into what caused the destructive fire.
