Officials: Jersey Shore Is Ready For Memorial Day Weekend

NEW JERSEY (CBSNewYork) -- As Memorial Day weekend nears, you may be wondering how the state of the Jersey Shore is following rebuilding from Superstorm Sandy and a very tough winter season.

For the record, "Our beaches are in excellent condition moving forward for this summer," Dr. Jon Miller said.

Miller, a research assistant professor at Stevens Institute, works on the State of the Shore report every year for the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium, WCBS 880's Levon Putney reported.

"We've been the beneficiary of a lot of great work done by the Corps of Engineers and the state in re-nourishing our beaches. So in a lot of cases, they're actually built back stronger and better even prior to Sandy," he said.

State Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Martin told Putney they've tested the waters up and down the shore.

"The water is excellent on all the shore beaches," he said. "So we're looking forward to the summer and a great start to the summer with Memorial Day."
