Police Chief Shot During Standoff With Suspect In Maybrook Village; Suspect Dead

MAYBROOK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - The police chief in the village of Maybrook in Orange County was shot during a standoff with a suspect.

Maybrook Police Chief Arnold "Butch" Amthor was shot in the shoulder while responding to a domestic disturbance call at a home on Abbey Avenue around 10 a.m. Tuesday, CBS2's Lou Young reported.

Amthor was taken to a hospital in Newburgh and is expected to be OK, CBS2 reported.

The standoff ended when police engaged in a shootout with the suspect Tuesday afternoon. The suspect was killed.

The initial shooting triggered a massive police response, with officers carrying heavy weapons and long rifles. State troopers as well as officers from as far away as Sullivan County responded to the scene. At least one armed officer was seen bearing an FBI insignia on his bullet-proof vest, Young reported.

Maybrook is 67 miles away from New York City.
